Head in the clouds, feet in the water
Nestled at the foot of the Maures Massif, Cogolin is home to one of the largest ports on the Côte d’Azur: les Marines de Cogolin and Port Cogolin.
The legend of Cogolin

It all began in Pisa in 68 AD. Torpès, the steward of Emperor Nero’s palace, was beheaded for refusing to renounce his Christian faith. His body was placed in a boat, accompanied by a rooster and a dog. The boat drifted down the Ligurian coast and washed up on the shore of what is now Saint-Tropez (whose name comes from Torpès). The dog left the boat and headed for Grimaud. As for the rooster, it found refuge in the countryside at the end of the Gulf, in the middle of a field of flax, on which a village was later built. The ‘Coq au lin’ (rooster in the flax) gave rise to Cogolin.
