Les Chapelles Saint-Roch

back to the list

In Cogolin, two chapels bearing the name of Saint Roch were built side by side at different times. 17th century chapel renovated in 2018, today presents itself as a cultural place in its own right, dedicated to artists from all walks of life.

In Cogolin, two chapels bearing the name of Saint Roch were built side by side at different times:
- The 1st on the right, was built around 1630. Sold as national property during the French Revolution, it was transformed into an agricultural building.
- The second on the left replaced the oldest around 1820.

These chapels housed the brotherhood of white penitents, an association of lay people attached to religious practice and who accompanied the deceased to their final resting place. Penitents wore a hood and a large robe called a bag.

The chapel on the right was restored between 2010 and 2012 and transformed into an exhibition space. To the left of its entrance, you can see the engraved year of the year 1635, the probable date of its consecration. To its right, the wall was doubled and reinforced in the 18th century. by four large buttresses. The chapel on the left, still in use, shows a very simple facade surmounted by a wall bell tower flanked by two pinnacles. It is decorated with a stained glass window by Jacqueline de Kock. Inside, you can see the large fresco of the Apocalypse of Saint John, painted by Patrice Henry-Biabaud between 1988 and 1990.

Many artists follow one another and exhibit their works in this mythical place. The "Evenings of the Chapel" attract creators, photographers, artistic performers, painters, sculptors, craftsmen, emerging talents, without geographical limit and, without limit in the artistic form, plastic or digital.
